Best Neighborhoods to Stay in San Francisco (Family-Friendly Hotels & Areas to Avoid)

Planning a trip to San Francisco with kids or teens? On my recent visit with my two teen girls, we explored some of my favorite spots in the city: the Ferry Building Marketplace, Fisherman’s Wharf, Crissy Field Beach, the Presidio, and the Palace of Fine Arts.

Choosing the right neighborhood can make your trip more enjoyable—especially if you want to be close to attractions, restaurants, and safe walking areas.

Here’s my guide to the best neighborhoods in San Francisco for families, top hotel recommendations, and a quick note on neighborhoods to avoid when traveling with kids. I’ve also included a fun transportation tip: how to ride in a Waymo driverless car during your stay.

Neighborhoods to Avoid When Traveling with Kids

While San Francisco is generally safe for tourists, I recommend avoiding the Tenderloin and certain parts of SoMa at night, as they can be less family-friendly and have higher rates of homelessness and crime.

Bonus Tip: Ride in a Waymo Driverless Car in San Francisco

One of the coolest things we tried on our trip was riding in a Waymo autonomous car. To book your ride:

  1. Download the Waymo One app.
  2. Create an account.
  3. Request a ride like you would on Uber or Lyft.

Waymo operates in many parts of San Francisco, and it’s a safe, futuristic, and fun way to get around—the kids loved it!

Final Travel Tip:
When choosing where to stay in San Francisco, focus on neighborhoods that match your itinerary. If you’re visiting Fisherman’s Wharf, Crissy Field, or the Palace of Fine Arts, consider booking in the Marina District or Embarcadero. These areas are safe, walkable, and filled with great dining options for families.
