Top things to do in Chicago for Christmas with Kids
There are so many festive and fun things to do in Chicago for Christmas, especially with the kids. I had the opportunity to bring my children to Chicago during Christmas, and I loved the festive atmosphere of Christmas in the city! The twinkling lights, towering Christmas trees, and decorations on every shop make it a truly enchanting and enjoyable experience.

Stroll Around the Chriskindl Market
Our first destination in Chicago for the Christmas festivities was the Christkindl Market. This is one of my favorite things to do in Chicago for Christmas as it’s one of the best markets in the country. Despite what you might see on Instagram, this place is crowded with visitors! Weekdays are optimal for this experience. However, that was the only drawback, as we thoroughly relished exploring the ornament shops, admiring the collectibles, and sipping the tasty German food and Glühwein, which is a must-try. My ultimate favorite treat in the world, Raclette cheese, is also served here, and it’s incredibly delicious!
Shop & Check out all of the Holiday Displays
Macy’s on State Street is a must-visit during the holiday season. It houses the iconic Walnut Room, renowned as the very first restaurant to open within a department store. This grand space is adorned with antique chandeliers and sprinkled with exquisite holiday decorations, with a great tree serving as its focal point. To create lasting holiday memories, be sure to make a reservation for a brunch or dinner. We had a lovely brunch here and enjoyed watching all the kids in their Christmas dresses and suits getting photos with the beautiful trees.
As you venture outside, you’ll discover many holiday displays. Macy’s Holiday windows among others have been a cherished tradition for over five decades, each year unveiling a new theme.
Ice Skate at Millennium Park & View the Bean
Millennium Park during the Christmas season holds a special place in my heart as I’ve visited it a few times. Although it can get quite chilly, the enormous Christmas tree that presides over the city provides a fantastic photo opportunity. Furthermore, this is the location of the renowned “Bean,” a must-see attraction if you haven’t had the chance to visit it before.
Another fun thing to do in Chicago for Christmas is to visit McCormick Tribune Plaza Ice Rink. This is also when the ice rink is open, allowing you to skate beneath the shimmering city lights and twinkling Christmas decorations.
Go to the top of the John Hancock Center and Visit the 360 Observation Deck
Another fun thing to do in Chicago is riding the elevator to the pinnacle of the John Hancock Center (now called the 360 Observation Deck). From this vantage point, there are breathtaking views of the city. On a clear day, the view seems to stretch endlessly, encompassing Lake Michigan and every facet of the city landscape.
For those seeking an extra dose of excitement, there’s the “Tilt” experience, perfect for both kids and adults. My daughter and niece decided to take on this exhilarating ride, with one of them thoroughly enjoying the adventure while the other found it to be a bit more nerve-wracking.

Visit the Museum of Science and Industry
Another fun thing to do in Chicago at Christmas is to visit the Museum of Science and Industry, where a festive atmosphere combines with scientific wonders. During Christmas, the museum undergoes a seasonal transformation, featuring beautifully decorated Christmas trees representing diverse cultural traditions. The Great Hall is illuminated with festive lights, creating a welcoming ambiance for visitors to explore exhibits that seamlessly integrate science and holiday themes. Special events and demonstrations provide interactive experiences, from holiday-themed science experiments to captivating light displays. Whether you’re appreciating the seasonal decorations or engaging with interactive exhibits, visiting the Museum of Science and Industry during Christmas offers a unique blend of scientific discovery and holiday joy.
Holiday Guided Tours
A wonderfully enjoyable approach to discovering these attractions is by joining a guided walking tour. Holiday-themed tours are on offer, sparing you the hassle of navigating these sites on your own.
Recommended Hotel
We stayed at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Chicago. This was in a great location overlooking the river. We could walk to the Christmas Market from here and Millennium Park (though it can be quite cold in the winter!)
