Top things to do in Chicago with Teens

Looking for fun things to do in Chicago with teens? You’re in the right place! We took my teen girls and teen niece to Chicago at Christmas time, and despite the cold, we found so much to do. From exciting attractions to cool shopping spots, here’s our guide to the top things to do in Chicago with teens. Whether your teens love adventure, culture, or just having a blast, this list has something for everyone.

1. 360 Chicago Observation Deck

The 360 Observation Deck in Chicago is one of the city’s must-visit attractions, especially if you love breathtaking views. Located in the iconic John Hancock Center, this observation deck offers stunning 360-degree views of Chicago and Lake Michigan. It’s my favorite thing to do in Chicago because, on a clear day, you can enjoy amazing views of the city’s skyline. Plus, the TILT feature provides a thrilling perspective, tilting you out over the city from 1,000 feet up!

2. Sky Deck

The Skydeck is located on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower and the tallest building in Chicago), and if you aren’t afraid of heights, it’s worth a visit. At 1,353 feet above the ground, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Chicago and beyond, extending up to four states on a clear day. The Skydeck features “The Ledge,” a series of glass boxes that extend out from the building, allowing you to walk out and feel like you are floating on top of the city! If you are brave enough, this can be an amazing experience for everyone (at least for the photo opportunity!).

3. Navy Pier

Navy Pier is a great stop in Chicago that teens will love. This area stretches into Lake Michigan and offers rides, shopping, food, cruises, and lake tours. Teens can enjoy thrilling rides at Pier Park, like the towering Centennial Wheel, which provides stunning views of the city skyline and lake. Navy Pier also has weekly events like fireworks and seasonal celebrations.

4. Millennium Park

Millennium Park in Chicago is a great spot for teens. It’s home to the iconic sculpture known as “The Bean,” which is perfect for snapping fun and reflective selfies. Teens can also enjoy the Crown Fountain, an interactive video sculpture that spits water, making it a great place to cool off in the summer. The park’s open spaces are perfect for hanging out, and there’s often live music, public art installations, and outdoor movie screenings. Plus, it’s right next to the lively Michigan Avenue, so there are plenty of shopping and dining options nearby. Millennium Park is in the area known as Grant Park which also includes Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum Campus. 

5. Maggie Daley Park

Near Millennium Park, you will find Maggie Daley Park, which has a variety of fun attractions. The park has a Play Garden with slides, climbing walls, and a pirate ship if you’re with younger kids. In the winter, there is an ice skating rink (called the Skating Ribbon) that transforms into a rollerblading track in the summer. Teens and adults can challenge themselves on the park’s Climbing Wall, one of the largest outdoor climbing structures in the city. With beautiful landscaping, picnic areas, and a mini-golf course, Maggie Daley Park is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy outdoor activities in downtown Chicago.

6.  River Architecture Tour

One of my favorite childhood memories in Chicago is the river walk architectural tour. As a kid, I was fascinated by the towering skyscrapers and intricate details of the city’s buildings. Cruising down the Chicago River and hearing the stories behind these architectural marvels was an experience I’ll never forget. This is one of the best things to do to see the city, offering a mix of history, art, and breathtaking views. If you’re in Chicago, this tour is a must-do, blending education with a fun, scenic boat ride that’s perfect for all ages and something teens will love!

7. Shop and Dine on the Magnificent Mile

The Magnificent Mile in Chicago is a teen’s paradise for shopping and dining! This popular stretch of Michigan Avenue is filled with trendy stores like Nike and Apple, and high-end department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue. Teens will love exploring trendy boutiques, flagship stores, and luxury brands. There are also great dining options in this area, from casual eateries to upscale restaurants. The area is also home to landmarks like the historic Water Tower and the John Hancock Center, adding a dose of culture and history to your shopping spree.

8. Shedd Aquarium

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Shedd Aquarium is one of the world’s largest and most renowned aquariums. Both young kids and teens will love making a stop here, as there are over 32,000 animals representing 1,500 species, including fish, marine mammals, birds, and reptiles. You can explore diverse exhibits like the Caribbean Reef, where you can see colorful coral and tropical fish, and the Amazon Rising, which showcases the unique ecosystem of the Amazon River. The Abbott Oceanarium is another highlight, featuring beluga whales, dolphins, sea otters, and sea lions. The Shedd also offers interactive experiences such as animal encounters, behind-the-scenes tours, and the opportunity to touch stingrays and starfish.

9. Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the largest science museums in the world and a fun place to visit for kids and teens. We came here during Christmas, and it was decorated with beautiful Christmas trees from around the world. The museum has lots of interactive exhibits, from space exhibits to an exhibit featuring the U-505 Submarine from World War II, to my kids’ favorite, a Baby Chick Hatchery.

10.  Art Institute of Chicago

For a great cultural experience, the Art Institute of Chicago is a must-visit. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious art museums in the United States. The museum has an expansive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including works by Monet, Renoir, and van Gogh.

11.  Lakefront Activities

During the warmer months, Chicago’s lakefront offers many activities that are fun for the whole family. There are some great beaches like North Avenue Beach, Oak Street Beach, and Montrose Beach. You can also enjoy activities such as biking on the Lakefront Trail, kayaking and paddleboarding, and boat tours.
